Thomas S. Foley Award
On April 10, 2008 the Japan-America Society of the State of Washington presented the Thomas S. Foley Award to the Seattle-Kobe Public School Teacher and Student Exchange Program at its 2008 Annual Meeting. Former exchange students and teachers of the program were also delighted to be reunited with Mr. Shizuo Takeuchi, a former exchange teacher and representative for the Kobe Board of Education, who flew in from Japan to accept the award on behalf of the City of Kobe Board of Education. The program, which exchanged educators and students from Seattle, Washington and Kobe, Japan, was established in 1958 and lasted until 1998.
Renewed High School Student Exchange Delegation
The City of Kobe revived the high school student exchange program with the Seattle Sea Fair Organization in 2007, after a long hiatus, as part of the 50 year celebration of the sister city relationship between the two cities. The 2007 student exchange delegation was highly successful and is expected to continue. The 2008 Student Delegation Exchange is expected to take place this Fall with the Kobe students to come to Seattle, in October. The Seattle students are expected in Kobe in early November.
